Waipu Caves and walkway
Glow worms can be seen just a short way into the main cave entrance
Waipu Caves are a popular and interesting place to visit. There are kilometres of caves and interesting rock formations inside them. Most of the caves do require you to be a experienced and professional caver but the main entrance is a easy to access cave for the general public to visit and safe enough to take children into. Glow worms can be seen just a short way into the main cave entrance and Stalactites and Stalagmites adorn the inside of the cave. You will need a torch and gum boots or if you don’t mind getting your shoes wet good footwear with a good grip would be recommended. A free campsite with cold shower and two toilets can be found at the front of the caves. Some of the land is owned by the council and some is privately owned so please respect the signs and rules when you are in the area and please take your rubbish home.
There is also a walk up through the bush past the caves and it takes you up to a view point with amazing views. It is roughly a 90 minute walk at a leisurely pace. The walkway route has orange markers to help you navigate your walk. Take plenty of water and enjoy.
